When Google and Facebook startled the world with their hip working culture, other companies strove to emulate them — if not their culture, then at least the working spaces that helped foster it — as long as they could afford it.

This, coupled with a growing number of freelancers and small enterprises that wanted the vibe without the investment, resulted in the rise of co-working spaces (shared offices) in Malaysia.

In fact, over the last five years, the Klang Valley in particular has seen the mushrooming of such spaces. All of them strive to offer something unique to their clients to differentiate themselves — not only from each other but also from conventional offices.

In additions, the advancement of technology has given rise to more flexible working arrangements and workplace innovations such as remote working, co-working spaces and teleconferencing.

In its “Fourth Industrial Revolution: The Impact on Real Estate in Southeast Asia” research report published in June 2016, international real estate services firm JLL expects flexible working, outsourcing and co-working spaces to accelerate in Southeast Asia in the next five years.

In Knight Frank’s 2017 Global Cities report, the firm noted that co-working spaces continue to be an attractive option for tech start-ups — offering flexibility, support and infrastructure for nascent companies.

Co-working Space Outlook

“The outlook for both Kuala Lumpur and Selangor office markets continue to remain subdued in 3Q2018. Despite this, the rise of shared offices and coworking segments provide a slight breather to the oversupplied office market,” Knight Frank Malaysia corporate services executive director Teh Young Khean said in a press release today.
